Zambia wins the African Cup of Nations

Belatedly I report, Zambia went the distance with the heavy favorites Ivory Coast, going scoreless for 120 minutes and forcing a shootout. The teams proceeded to make fourteen consecutive PKs then missed three before Stophira Sunzu hit his shot to give Zambia their first continental champtionship.

Taking one of the eight successful shots for Zambia was keeper Kennedy Mweene, who netted a nice easy shot with opposing keeper Boubacar Barry going the wrong way. Kolo Toure had his shot saved and Gervinho skied his shot from the eight and nine spots.

Didier Drogba had a golden chance to seal the deal at 70', but he wasted the opportunity Gervinho created, shooting well over the bar. The card was given to to the wrong player; it is clear in the replay that Isaac Chansa ran into Gervinho, shoving him into Nyabe Mulenga's next step. Mulenga was carded and immediately subbed off.
